On Monday afternoon (April 22), Mayor Rafael Greca signed into law the Artificial Intelligence Act, which establishes principles and guidelines for the adoption and use of artificial intelligence (AI) in direct and indirect municipal public administration.
“The world’s smartest city is once again leading the way in Brazil by regulating the use of artificial intelligence in public administration, paving the way for other municipalities,” the mayor noted.
Approved in late March by the City Council, the new law stemmed from a proposal by Councilman Nori Seto, who accompanied the mayor at the signing. Also present for the signing of the legislation were the Secretary of Municipal Government and President of Ippuc, Luiz Fernando Jamur, and attorney Aline Macohin, author of the book *Artificial Intelligence in Brazilian Public Administration* and an expert in new technologies.
“We must invest in the use of AI technologies in a way that is consistent with our commitment to human dignity and the value of humanity. While the law provides legal certainty for the use of AI in Curitiba, it also establishes standards for commitment to the public good,” said Nori Seto.
Law No. 16,321 of 2024 further stipulates that artificial intelligence systems used in public administration must be auditable and subject to appropriate oversight, and it takes effect 90 (ninety) days after the date of its publication in the Official Gazette.
Some City Hall initiatives that already use Artificial Intelligence
